The long-in-the-works Call of Duty movie has a setting: the Modern Warfare universe. Director Peter Berg confirmed the detail over the weekend during a "Call of Duty in Culture" panel at Fanatics Fest on July 18, according to Eurogamer and Polygon.
That is essentially the whole reveal for now. Berg did not lay out a plot, but he did drop several familiar names from the games, and Polygon reports he referenced Captain Price, Soap, Gaz, Alex Keller, General Shepherd, and Ghost. That suggests the film will lean on characters players already know rather than build an entirely new cast from scratch.
What we actually know
The movie was announced earlier this year and remains scheduled for a theatrical release on June 30, 2028. The project is a partnership between Activision and Paramount, with Berg directing.
When the film was first announced, Activision head and producer Rob Kostich framed the studio's cautious approach. He said the company "were only going to make a movie if it's right," adding that in David Ellison they had found the right partnership and that the goal was to "make sure that the authenticity of it is captured on a human level so that it feels really real and infuse that with epic scope."
Beyond the setting and the release date, there is little concrete information available. No cast, no story synopsis, and no first-look footage have been shared.
Familiar ground
Picking Modern Warfare is a safe bet. It is one of Call of Duty's most popular sub-series, so anchoring a film to it gives Paramount a built-in audience. Polygon's writeup, however, reads the choice as a symptom of a larger pattern, noting that eight of the past nine Call of Duty games have belonged to either the Modern Warfare or Black Ops lines.
That matters because Activision itself has signaled a change in direction. Per Polygon, the company was disappointed by the mixed reception to Black Ops 7 and announced plans to stop releasing games from the same sub-series back-to-back. Yet the recently revealed Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4, combined with the movie's Modern Warfare tie-in, points to the franchise staying close to its most reliable brands.
Meanwhile, the series' back catalog is having a moment. Eurogamer notes that the recent Black Ops 1 and 2 ports for PlayStation 4 and 5 have become the most popular titles on the PS Store despite their price, though they have also brought back long-standing headaches like hackers and modded lobbies. Some players are calling for Activision to reset all progress and start fresh.
