Infinity Ward has patched a bug in Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4's DMZ mode that let enemy AI vehicles run players over as soon as they dropped into a match, Eurogamer reports. The fix landed only hours after DMZ opened in early access.

That early access went live overnight for everyone who pre-ordered the game. It unlocked the campaign and DMZ, the game's extraction mode. Eurogamer describes early reactions to DMZ as fairly positive, but one spawn problem had been ending some rounds before they started.

A spawn point in the middle of a road

DMZ's Hajin map uses several random spawn locations. Unlike standard multiplayer, they are usually placed near the map's edges, which gives squads room to plan a route and pick a target before any fighting starts. One of those points, though, sits in the middle of a road. If an enemy patrol happened to be driving past at that moment, the player could be hit and killed on the spot.

Eurogamer pointed to two Reddit clips. In one, user grillimperator had only a brief moment to dive clear. In the other, user Deep-Operation-3552 dropped the instant they took control after the infil cutscene, with the mode's "Welcome to the DMZ" voice line playing as they went down. Eurogamer said these cases suggest there was no spawn protection at all. DMZ does have ways to get back up after being downed, but they require the right equipment, and in these clips players were run over twice anyway.

The stakes are higher than in a normal match. DMZ is persistent, so dying means losing all the gear you brought in, including anything valuable you chose to risk that round.

The patch and the rest of DMZ

The road spawn was one of several issues Infinity Ward addressed in a new DMZ patch. According to Eurogamer, the patch notes name it directly: "Fixed some instances where enemy AI could run over players while infilling."

Once players survive the drop, the mode gives them a set of orders to work through. PC Gamer's early guide says one of the first is clearing a compound, a small enemy stronghold marked on the map with tent and flag icons. Some compounds need keys, and difficulty varies. To complete the order, players have to kill every enemy inside, then grab the Medical Extraction Intel dropped by the last one and extract with it. PC Gamer recommends the two open army camps in Daesong Ridge, in the south of the map, as easier targets with fewer enemies. It adds that the safes in those camps hold decent loot.

According to Eurogamer, Modern Warfare 4's last mode, traditional multiplayer, unlocks at full launch on Friday, October 23, on PC, PS5, Xbox Series X/S and Switch 2. The campaign has made a strong start, with Eurogamer calling it one of the best-received Call of Duty games on Steam so far. One player has already finished it on YOLO, the hardest difficulty, where you get only one life.
