Halo: Campaign Evolved Patch Due Next Week With Fixes for Johnson AI, Jackals and Chromatic Aberration

The update lands between August 17 and 21, targeting five of the remake's biggest complaints, but it will wipe mid-mission save data.

Halo Studios has a substantial patch on the way for Halo: Campaign Evolved, and it takes aim at several of the problems players have flagged since the remake shipped a few weeks ago. According to Eurogamer, the update is targeted for release sometime between August 17 and August 21, though no exact date has been locked in yet.

What's changing

Halo Support laid out five headline fixes in a tweet spotted by Eurogamer. The list covers a mix of progression bugs, combat tuning and quality-of-life options:

  • Sergeant Johnson's AI is being improved to stop it from blocking mission progression.
  • Jackals can now be staggered more reliably when you target their hands and feet.
  • Marines and Flood Marines will actually fire their Assault Rifles when the Magnified Skull is active.
  • Players can now switch off Chromatic Aberration and Film Grain.
  • Additional stability improvements are coming across multiple platforms.

The Johnson fix is the notable one for anyone who has hit a wall mid-campaign, since a stuck AI companion could stop a mission dead. The option to disable chromatic aberration and film grain also addresses a common request from players who wanted a cleaner image.

One important warning

There is a catch worth flagging before you settle in for a long session. Eurogamer notes that once the patch is deployed, any mid-mission save data will be invalidated. In practice that means if you are one checkpoint away from finishing a level on Legendary and the game updates before you get back to it, you will lose that progress. If you are deep into a tough run this weekend, it may be worth wrapping up a mission rather than leaving it hanging when the update could drop.

Full patch notes have not been published yet, and Eurogamer says they will be shared once the update actually lands.

A rocky launch

The patch arrives against a mixed backdrop. Campaign Evolved reviewed well, but Eurogamer reports it has struggled commercially on PS5, where the studio points to the low-effort Black Ops 1 and 2 ports apparently outselling the Halo remake roughly 16 to 1. Series co-creator Marcus Lehto has also publicly criticized changes to the game's art style.

There have been staffing consequences too. After the game shipped, multiple contractor positions were terminated, in line with the wider cuts across Microsoft's Xbox division, where 3,200 salaried roles were cut earlier this year. Even so, Halo Studios appears to be pressing on with the almost-confirmed Halo 2 remake that was teased in a stinger at the end of Campaign Evolved.

What it means for players

If you are playing Halo: Campaign Evolved now, plan around that save-wipe warning: finish the mission you are on before the update window opens between August 17 and 21. Beyond the immediate fixes, this patch is an early signal of how much post-launch support the remake will get, which matters if you are keeping an eye on the teased Halo 2 remake that Halo Studios looks set to tackle next.
