Square Enix has confirmed that Final Fantasy 7 Revelation, the third and final entry in the Remake trilogy, will show up at this year's Gamescom Opening Night Live. The publisher made the announcement on X/Twitter, promising fans a "new look" at the game during Geoff Keighley's annual showcase on Wednesday, August 25.
The show kicks off at 7pm BST (11am PT / 2pm ET). What sets this segment apart from a standard trailer drop is who's showing up: director Naoki Hamaguchi will be involved in the presentation. Both Eurogamer and VGC read that as a hint the appearance could be more substantial than a quick clip, possibly including an on-stage interview and the chance of further announcements.
What we know about the finale
Final Fantasy 7 Revelation is set to close out the trilogy that began with Remake and continued with Rebirth. It's currently targeting the first half of 2027, with Eurogamer specifying a spring 2027 window. There's no firm release date yet.
One notable change this time around: Revelation won't be a timed console exclusive like its predecessors. VGC reports the game will launch the same day on PS5, Xbox Series X/S, Nintendo Switch 2, and PC. That's a shift from the earlier releases, which arrived on PlayStation first.
Sales momentum has been strong in the lead-up. Following Revelation's reveal at Summer Game Fest 2026, Eurogamer notes that Final Fantasy 7 Remake and Rebirth have been selling "several times better" than expected, suggesting the finale announcement pulled new players toward the earlier chapters.
The DLC question
Hamaguchi has been clear that the base game will bring a definitive close to the trilogy's story, pushing back on worries about an epilogue tacked on later. Speaking to Automaton, he said: "The story will be concluded within the main game. We're serious about concluding the series with Final Fantasy 7 Revelation, and we're proceeding with development with that goal in mind."
He didn't rule out extra content entirely, but framed any future DLC as a side story rather than an extension of the ending. "If we were to hypothetically release any DLC, we would likely want to create a kind of spin-off focused on a specific character that depicts their untold stories, kind of like what we did with Yuffie with Final Fantasy 7 Episode Intermission," Hamaguchi said, adding that he believes there's fan demand for it.
That comment lines up with a detail VGC flagged: dataminers reportedly spotted an Epic Games Store listing last month that included a "Story Expansion Pass" among an apparent list of DLC. Whether that pass turns into a character spin-off in the mold of Intermission remains to be seen.
What it means for players
If you're tracking the Remake trilogy's conclusion, August 25 is the date to watch. A director-hosted segment usually means more than a teaser, so Opening Night Live is the most likely place to learn concrete details, and possibly a firm release date, for Final Fantasy 7 Revelation ahead of its 2027 launch. The multiplatform, same-day rollout also means PS5, Xbox Series X/S, Switch 2, and PC owners can all plan around the same window this time.
