The weeks of speculation have wrapped up. Dave Bautista will play Kratos in Amazon's live-action God of War series, according to a Variety report picked up by multiple outlets, closing out negotiations that first surfaced earlier this month.
The casting fills a gap created by injury. Ryan Hurst, best known for Sons of Anarchy and for voicing Thor in God of War Ragnarok, was originally cast as the Ghost of Sparta and began filming in Vancouver back in February. In June, he tore his bicep on set, an injury that required surgery. With recovery reportedly taking up to a year, the studios behind the show decided they couldn't wait and started looking for a replacement.
Scenes Will Be Reshot
The change comes with real production cost. Reports say four episodes had already been shot with Hurst before the injury, and now Kratos' scenes across that footage will have to be filmed again with Bautista in the role. Filming is expected to resume in the coming weeks, with the series carrying a two-season order that will apparently be shot back-to-back.
Bautista fits the physical brief in a way few actors can. Deadline noted that Hurst had put on 40 pounds of muscle for the part, the kind of transformation that isn't easy to match on short notice. Bautista, the former WWE wrestler turned actor known for Guardians of the Galaxy, Blade Runner 2049 and Spectre, recently bulked up again for the Highlander reboot, so the physical demands should be within reach. Interestingly, he told Entertainment Weekly in 2024 that he doubted his action-hero days would continue: "I'm not the great, big, muscular guy I used to be," he said, adding, "I'm not going to get action roles into my 50s." At 57, he's now landed one of the biggest.
What the Show Covers
Created by Ronald D. Moore (Battlestar Galactica, Outlander), the series is set to follow the story of the 2018 God of War, tracking Kratos and his young son Atreus across Midgard as they journey to scatter the ashes of their wife and mother. A second season would presumably move into Ragnarok territory, where father and son face the end of the world.
More recasting is on the way, but that part is planned rather than forced. In Season 1, Atreus is played by Callum Vinson and Thrud by Island Austin. Casting calls spotted for the second season are looking for older actors, in the 14 to 17 range rather than the first season's 9 to 12, to reflect the time jump between the two games. No release date for the show has been announced.
For fans tracking how the God of War games translate to screen, this is a reset worth watching. The adaptation is drawing directly from God of War (2018) and God of War Ragnarok, and a lead swap this deep into production is the kind of behind-the-scenes turbulence that can shift release timing. With filming set to resume soon and two seasons planned back-to-back, the next few months will show whether Bautista's Kratos gets the show back on solid ground.
