Jagex has revealed a fourth mainline RuneScape MMO, currently known by the working title RS4, and says it is still several years away from launch. The studio unveiled the project with an animated teaser at RuneFest, its in-person event in Birmingham, over the weekend.

The name is not final. According to Eurogamer, Jagex has not committed to calling it RuneScape 4, even though the series previously carried the RuneScape 2 and RuneScape 3 labels before the studio dropped numbering altogether.

Set years after Dragonwilds, built in Unreal

RS4 is being made in Unreal Engine, a big shift for the mainline series, which Kotaku notes has run on Jagex's in-house RuneTek engine. The spin-off RuneScape: Dragonwilds already uses Unreal Engine 5, though Kotaku reports Jagex has not said which version of Unreal the new MMO will use. Dragonwilds launched on September 15, 2026 on PC, PS5, Switch and Xbox, according to Gamebonk's release tracker.

The teaser places the new game in Gielinor's Sixth Age, starting in Ashenfall, a region introduced in Dragonwilds. The story picks up years after the events of that game and the defeat of the Dragon Queen Kuldra. Jagex says Ashenfall is just the starting point, with plans to expand into both new and familiar parts of Gielinor over time.

The studio says the reveal came early on purpose so players can help shape development, with Jagex pointing to the tech groundwork from Dragonwilds and the community-driven approach used on RuneScape and Old School RuneScape. "We’ve learned that our games are at their best when we build with you, not just for you," the studio said in its announcement.

Jagex is also stressing that RS4 will not replace anything. The game has its own dedicated team, and RuneScape, Old School RuneScape and Dragonwilds will each keep their own teams and ongoing support. Kotaku also highlights the studio's pledge that integrity and permanent progression will be core to the new game's design.

A RuneScape cartoon with MoistCr1tikal

Alongside the game, Jagex announced an animated RuneScape adaptation. It is being produced with LA studio Lyrical Media and YouTuber Charlie White, better known as MoistCr1tikal. Kotaku notes Lyrical is also behind How to Blow Up a Pipeline, Onslaught and the upcoming Bloodborne film. According to Eurogamer, the series will draw on RuneScape's 25 years of history and the more than 300 million player accounts created since the game first launched.
